Thinking Out Loud: Nice Protection, If You Can Get It

Have you noticed that after every mass shooting President Obama ignores its cause — these days usually mental illness and, increasingly (though he is loathe to admit it), radical Jihad — and instead blames it on the availability of guns in America? He then demands more laws against gun ownership, even though the two shooters in the latest tragedy in San Bernardino, Ca., obtained their guns by breaking current gun laws, which suggests that, rather than more gun laws, we should focus on better enforcing the current ones. (Speaking of focusing on better enforcement, both shooters were radical Islamic jihadists who entered this country by easily passing a Department of Homeland Security background check.)

Hillary Clinton has also proposed cracking down on gun ownership, including issuing an executive order extending background checks to private citizens who sell or give guns to friends, family members, etc. (Congress has repeatedly rejected legislation that would achieve this end, hence Hillary’s need for an executive order). Hillary has also called for legislation that would make gun manufacturers liable for the misuse of their products, which, as I wrote previously, is like making the manufacturer of Louisville Slugger baseball bats liable if people use Louisville Sluggers to harm others.

Of course, it is easy for both Hillary and President Obama to demand more gun control since neither of them has to carry a gun to protect themselves or their families from harm. Instead, they and their families enjoy Secret Service protection 24-7, 365 days a year. Whenever President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and their daughters Malia and Sasha leave the heavily fortified White House to go to anywhere they are accompanied by a phalanx of Secret Service guards who, in order to protect them, are armed with many guns, including — depending on circumstances — semi-automatic weapons and assault rifles that, ironically, President Obama and Hillary insist the public should not be permitted to own.

Ditto Hillary and Bill (and daughter Chelsea), who also have 24-7 Secret Service protection at taxpayer expense.

This is not to say that both presidents and former presidents, and their families, don’t deserve Secret Service protection — they do. But it is to say that it’s a lot easier to be a gun-control advocate when you don’t need a gun to protect yourself because you have heavily armed, heavily trained body guards to do the job for you.

In contrast, the rest of the 322 million Americans out there may see things a bit differently. It’s a scary time in our country right now, so lacking a crew of heavily armed bodyguards at their beck-and-call, many of them just might view their Second Amendment right to arm themselves as the next best thing.
